Global Change
Art Project Reflection
Air Quality in our depiction of the rainforest was mainly depicted through two aspects: the presence or absence of flying insects and the quantity of trees. Forests worldwide are the one of the largest carbon sinks second only to the ocean. The lack of trees in the futuristic view of the rainforest shows that there is a dramatic decrease in the amount of trees available to take carbon out of the atmosphere. The antithesis of the first rainforest metioned is shown in the plush rain forest that has a majority of the view covered in trees and other green plants. As well as in the first rainforest picture there is a beautiful butterfly on top of a tree showing that the air is still a consistency that allows insects to be able to fly and flourish but in the second one there are no insects specifically flying ones showing that the air quality is not fit.
Water quality in this picture is shown through plant and soil composition. In the first view there is clearly seen a river flowing through the rain forest and the plant life is very diverse and vivacious. However in the futuristic view of the rainforest there is only a few surviving plants that have been able to survive the lack of surface water. Also the soil composition in the futuristic view is shown as extreme cracked and salinated soil that has large crevices and no water availability in it at all make so that there is no filtration or absorption to improve the water quality making it so that the water must be polluted if only by the particulate matter. And in the present view while it doesn’t show the soil out right it can be inferred by the plant life that the water is absorbed very well and also is filtered through the plants roots and soil but the water table is also doing well by the existence of the river.
Waste can easily be seen through litter and the soil displayed throughout the environment in the futuristic scene. There are some building materials and monuments scattered about the scene. As well as in the present scene there are no human elements just natural plants and animals with no litter present at all. Secondly a more subtle way of showing waste is through the plant matter. The future view depicts very few plants with some wood matter wasted off to the side showing that the humans in this environment were not good stewards and slowly surely destroyed the plant matter and even just killed some and left it out not even using the materials made from it.
Finally climate is the last element depicted in the views through inferred ozone levels as well as soil conditions. From the lack of plant matter and increase in human structures it can be inferred in the futuristic picture that equipment such as bulldozers and cranes were used to construct the buildings and clear the land emitting greenhouse gases like carbon dioxide which eventually increases the overall temperature affecting the climate! As well as it can be seen that the area moved from a temperate climate full of moisture and plants to an arid almost desert like climate.
Creating this piece was really an eye opening experience because it required me to think incredibly closely about what characterized each environment and how I could depict it so that the on-looker could accurately understand all of the elements. As well as personally I wanted to have some sort of emotional aspect to it because thinking about it created that sort of response in me so I wanted to make sure to share the to the viewer. In the end I was able to incorporate everything into the shoebox representation and make sure that no matter decided to look at it, everyone could understand the peril that we will be in if we continue on the path we are headed.
Personally I believe that the earth and the human race at a whole needs to change. Not so much for the global warming aspect of it because there is a lot of evidence that supports the fact that the earth is undergoing a natural cycle but for the fact that the human race is quickly losing appreciation for nature. Nature holds an incredible amount of solutions that baffle the best in every field so if we destroy it before we can learn from it than those lessons are lost forever. As well as the aesthetic use for nature is extremely important. Being able to appreciate the natural phenomena like the grand canyon and Niagara falls and the rain forest are disappearing very quickly and without these things I believe the world will be at a great lost.
